It is also useful to compare 72 inches with nearby whole-foot measurements. It is 12 inches longer than 5 feet and 12 inches shorter than 7 feet.
At about 1.83 meters, it is long enough to be similar to the height or length of several larger household items.
Everyday Things Close to 72 Inches
Some objects are made in 72-inch sizes, while others are only close. Product dimensions can vary, so the examples below explain where the comparison is exact and where it is approximate.
1. Six 12-Inch Rulers
A standard 12-inch ruler is one foot long. Place six 12-inch rulers end to end, and their total length is exactly 72 inches.
This is one of the easiest ways to picture 6 feet because there is no approximation involved.
2. Two Yardsticks
One yard is exactly 36 inches. Two yardsticks placed end to end measure:
36 + 36 = 72 inches
So two full yard lengths give you an exact visual reference for 72 inches.
3. A 72-Inch Shower Curtain
Many shower curtains are made with a length of 72 inches. For example, Home Depot lists standard shower curtains measuring 70 inches wide by 72 inches long, as well as models measuring 72 by 72 inches.
If you have a standard shower curtain at home, its hanging length may give you a very good idea of what 6 feet looks like. Check the label because shower curtain sizes can vary.
4. A 6-Foot Folding Table
Some folding tables are exactly 72 inches long. Lifetime, for example, lists one of its 6-foot folding tables at 72 inches long, 30 inches wide, and 29 inches high.
Looking along the full length of a table like this gives you an exact 72-inch reference.
5. A 6-Foot Picnic Table
Six-foot picnic tables can also measure 72 inches from one end to the other. One Lifetime model has overall dimensions of 72 inches long by 57 inches wide.
Picnic tables come in several sizes, so this comparison applies specifically to models sold as 6-foot tables.
6. A Tall Bookcase
Some tall bookcases reach exactly 72 inches in height. One solid-wood bookcase sold by Home Depot is listed at 32 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 72 inches high.
A bookcase of this size is therefore exactly 6 feet tall and can make 72 inches easy to picture vertically.
7. A Large Desk
Large office and computer desks are sometimes 72 inches wide. Home Depot carries many desks in this width, including rectangular models listed at 72 inches across.
Desks vary greatly in size, so an ordinary desk should not be assumed to measure 6 feet. The comparison works specifically for desks sold in a 72-inch size.
8. A Garage Workbench
Large garage workbenches can also be 72 inches wide. One Husky workbench is listed at 72 inches wide and 24 inches deep.
If you have seen a large six-foot workbench in a garage or workshop, its width is a useful example of the target length.
9. A 6-Foot Artificial Christmas Tree
Artificial Christmas trees are commonly sold by height, and 6-foot models are widely available. A tree sold as exactly 6 feet tall represents 72 inches from its base to its stated top height.
Actual assembled height can depend on the model and how the top branches are positioned, so it is best to use the manufacturer’s listed height.
10. A Twin Mattress
A standard twin mattress is 75 inches long, according to Casper. That makes it only 3 inches longer than 72 inches.
Picture a twin mattress and remove about 3 inches from its length. What remains is roughly 72 inches, or 6 feet.
11. A Standard Interior Door
A typical stock interior door is around 80 inches tall, which is 6 feet 8 inches. That makes it 8 inches taller than 72 inches.
So if you stand next to a common 80-inch door, the 72-inch point would be about 8 inches below its top.
72 Inches Compared to Nearby Heights
Since 72 inches lands exactly on 6 feet, nearby inch measurements are easy to compare.
| Inches | Feet and Inches | Difference From 72 in |
|---|---|---|
| 70 in | 5′ 10″ | 2 in shorter |
| 71 in | 5′ 11″ | 1 in shorter |
| 72 in | 6′ 0″ | Exact |
| 73 in | 6′ 1″ | 1 in longer |
| 74 in | 6′ 2″ | 2 in longer |
A person or object measuring 71 inches is one inch shorter than 6 feet. At 73 inches, it is one inch taller or longer.
